Kitrini Skala – Guilty Pleasure on Market Street

When you spend all day surrounded by art, it's easy to lose track of time, so around 7 PM, right before the dinner rush hits, is when we usually give in.

Kitrini Skala is a small fast-food spot just a few shops up the street from Lillu. Last week we caught that brief quiet window, staff still catching their breath before the orders started stacking up. Even so, the place had energy. Good energy, the kind that comes from people who actually like what they do.

Behind the kitchen is Chef Alexandros Lekas, a familiar name to food lovers on Lemnos. He's worked in and shaped the menus for some of the island's most respected restaurants. His wife, Chef Eleni Kalogianni, currently on maternity leave is just as talented. This is very much a family affair.

Naturally, we asked about the name.

Alexandros smiled, Kitrini Skala or Yellow Stairs was chosen by the team themselves. There's a spiral staircase inside, and after they chose the name they painted it bright yellow, so that the name fits.

Sometimes the best stories are the simple ones.

The restaurant fills up fastest in summer but stays open all year, with the menu shifting slightly for winter and the local community. Alexandros told us he has had chances to work on the mainland over the years. He has turned them down every time.

"Life here is calmer," he said. "There's a different rhythm. You have time to breathe."

We couldn't agree more.

And the food is exactly what you hope for after a long day. The burgers are packed with flavor, sitting next to what might be the best smashed fries on the island, crispy, golden, dangerously easy to keep eating. The noodles are rich and comforting, the rice bowls actually fill you up, and if you're feeling snackish, the corn dogs are worth it.

Places like Kitrini Skala remind us that great food doesn't need white tablecloths.

Sometimes it just needs honest cooking and a reason to come back.

So if you're wandering Market Street with a rumbling stomach, follow the yellow stairs.
